Over the past year, sadly, we've had the opportunity to see a lot of CEOs share bad news with their teams, for example, in the form of layoff notices. Having read quite a few of these, I think we can come away with a simple rule, which is to share the news quickly and cleanly -- and to make sure those who are affected know their status as soon as possible.
Stripe. CEO Patrick Collison's email read: "If you are among those impacted, you will receive a notification email within the next 15 minutes." (Actually, Collison gets extra credit for crafting a layoff notice email that's so humane that you can almost forget people are losing their jobs when you read it.)
